Disrespecting Your Elders |
| Posted by a8tbonesunda - 07-1-09 16:24 - 0 comments |

At what point is it, when you are disrespecting your elders? In the Fa'aSamoa way, we are taught to respect your elders reguardless, and some samoan parents are very sensitive, no matter of good intentions on a subject that clearly the new and yound gerneration of today understands, you will still be wrong. So most of the time you don't even bring it up, whatever the subject it is, because most samoan elders are stubborn in their own ways. Is answering back in a mild manner trying to explain your point a bad thing? If I don't back talk my parents or grandparents, but show my disgruntle facial expression is that still considered disrespectful? What if you know you are a respectful kid, and you do everything your parents ask of you, and on one thing they ask you not to do, you go ahead and do it anyways...ie: not to play sports, not to marry(w**vere somebody is they disapprove of),or not to give money for fa'alavelaves..will that be disrespectful?

Looking For My Bro, Richard Miava |
| Posted by Andrew K - 06-10-09 01:54 - 1 comments |

I was in the Navy, 1986 - 1990 on the West Coast (Oakland). My best friend was Richard Miava. Like many Samoan men, Richard was very private about his past and feelings. Although he spoke to me more than anyone else, I don't know a great deal. I do know Richard was born in Samoa (he could speak a little), but also lived for a few years in Hawaii with his Grandma. There was a reason he didn't stay with his parents. I didn't want to pry, so I don't know what happened or why they sent Richard to Hawaii. If anyone knows him, PLEASE ask him to call or email me. He was a great friend and I am a better person due to his friendship. I am Irish, so Richard and I had a common language, alcohol!! All kidding aside, I think about Richard a lot and would really love to talk to my dear friend. Our childhoods were very similiar, he always understood me better than anyone. Are you out there Bro? I know you had some trouble when you got out. Please let me know you are OK. Maybe I could help if you needed it. Please bro, you know you NEVER have to be embarassed or shy with me. Just cause you're big don't mean I won't tax that big brown ***, call me Bro. I gotta son now. He knows all about you. I talk about you a lot. My Mom and Dad still ask for you too. email me bro. Please. (IMG: style_emoticons/default/blackeyesmiley.gif) (He looks like we used to every Sunday morning!)
